About Samrajni

Assamese artisan weaving natural silk on a traditional handloom beside the river

Why Samrajni?

The name Samrajni is inspired by the Sanskrit word साम्राज्ञी (samrājñī), meaning “Empress”.

For us, the name begins with a simple idea: Mother Nature is the greatest Empress of all.

The silks we work with — Muga, Eri, Mulberry and Tussar — come from nature and carry within them a story that began long before they became fabric. Their beauty, texture and character are gifts of the natural world, shaped further by the hands and knowledge of skilled artisans.

We chose the name Samrajni as a quiet tribute to that relationship between nature, craft and the people who bring it to life.

It also reflects the women behind much of Assam’s weaving heritage. Around 90% of the weavers we work with are women, carrying knowledge, skill and traditions that have travelled through generations.

So Samrajni is more than a name.

It is our way of honouring the Empress who gives us the silk, the women and artisans who give it life, and the timeless craft that connects the two.
